Silver

Silver (Ag, Latin: argentum) is a chemical element from the group of transition metals in the periodic table. It is one of the precious metals which occur naturally in the native state and are found in numerous chemical compounds.
Silver has several own minerals such as:
- argentite (Ag2S)
- bromargyrite
- cerargyrite (AgCl)
- native silver (pure metal)
but it is mainly obtained as a by-product in processing of other metal ores. Silver is soft, ductile and malleable which allows to easily form silver to various shapes and draw fine wires and foils, therefore it has been used to make jewellery and ornaments since ancient times. If exposed to air silver gradually loses lustre due to thin and black layer of silver sulphide build-up on the surface. Silver is a component of numerous metal alloys used in coinage. It is also used in electronics, chemical industry, photography and medicine and of course in jeweller’s craft for silver jewellery.
